In the early 1940s, during World War II, the United States needed to concentrate
its national resources on waging war. As part of this effort, the Wartime Production Board imposed strict regulations on the manufacture of civilian consumer goods, including clothing . In particular, cotton and metal parts (rivets, buttons, etc.) used in clothing were prioritized for military use, and workwear, including jeans, was greatly affected. Under the guidance of the Board, details considered luxury items were thoroughly eliminated, and specifications were changed such as simplifying rivets, eliminating rivets on watch pockets, and replacing arcuate stitching with printed (painted) material . As a result, various parts of jeans were greatly simplified to wartime specifications, transforming into a rugged, practical design.
